INTRACYTOPLASMIC SPERM INJECTION (ICSI) It is a process where in a sperm is injected via in vitro fertilization technique. This is required whence the sperm count in the male is very low. In ICSI a single sperm is injected in to the egg. If sperms are absent in ejaculate the extraction can take place directly from the testis. This is also known as testicular sperm extraction. It requires a micro manipulator which holds the egg by suction. Following this a sharp needle used to inject a single sperm to achieve fertilization. This technique is a boon for couples whence conventional IVF is not successful. This happens when the sperm count is very low or the sperms are non motile. In case when both fallopian tubes are blocked completely or when female suffers from severe endometriosis or in the case when the male (husband) has very small number of motile and normal sperms. Also in instances of reasons due to which the fertilization does not occur in outer part of the fallopian tube. HOW IT IS ACHIEVED? Under the guidance of sonography the eggs from the female partner is retrieved out of the ovaries with the help of a needle. It is done under anesthesia, hence not painful. The egg is then kept in a dish where in there is similar environment as in the womb. The sperms are seprated form the semen sample, provided by the male partner. The healthiest sperms are processed and mixed with the eggs and then kept in incubator for 48 hours to 72 hours. For blastocyst transfer, we do it for 120 hrs (5 days). HOW LONG IS THE TREATMENT?
